More than eighty years have passed since Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s last expedition reached the Geographical South Pole. Since then there have been two great wars and many smaller ones that brought countless examples of courage and self sacrifice.
On this distant continent, high on the Antarctic plateau, there is no sign of life. Birds do not fly this far South. Perhaps a few skuas may have followed vapour trails from the aircraft and become lost, but animals have not really visited the Pole since the days of the explorers when dogs were the method of transport for equipment and food. Humans, however, are a different matter. Just over ten years ago, the only people who could get to the South Pole were governments and scientists and a small number of expeditions. But now you can be flown direct to the Pole and enjoy this remotest of destinations for yourself.
The actual flight to the South Pole will be in a Twin Otter or Cessna-185 aircraft and will take, at the least, approximately 6 hours from Patriot Hills base camp. Yet, cocooned en route to the Geographical South Pole, we have a bird’s eye view of this magnificent continent in all its vastness and splendour.
The distance between Punta Arenas and the South Pole is 4283km (2660 miles), whilst from Patriot Hills it is only 1095km (680 miles). Once you have reached your destination there is no place further South for you to go.
"Fly to the South Pole" programme will provide you with skills to enable you to discover the beauty and greatness of this geographical point..
Whether those who choose to venture this far South come to seek scientific data, to climb and ski or just to wonder at the continent and enjoy the experience for all that it is, all remain transient visitors. We all have a very real responsibility to ensure that our conduct is in harmony with the Antarctic environment. Each of us comes away inspired.
To stand on the Geographic South Pole at 90 degrees latitude is as significant today as it was for Scott and his men so many years ago. You will return with a marvellous story and cherished memories.
